Ron Paul to stop campaigning in state primary contests
May 15th, 2012Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul will no longer compete in primary states, in an effort to concentrate on picking up more delegates before the Republican convention in August.
“Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process,” said Paul, who has chosen not to run for re-election in his House seat, in an email sent to reporters Monday afternoon. (RELATED: Full coverage of the Paul campaign)
Paul added that his campaign “will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that Liberty is the way of the future.”
“We will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted,” the email continued. “Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have. I encourage all supporters of Liberty to make sure you get to the polls and make your voices heard, particularly in the local, state, and Congressional elections, where so many defenders of Freedom are fighting and need your support.”
Eleven states, including delegate-rich Texas and California, are still yet to hold their primary contests. The Nebraska and Oregon primaries will take place Tuesday.
The email added that the Paul campaign would reveal its delegate strategy to supporters “soon.”

Sizek’s national top-10 time the highlight of late-week contests
May 15th, 2012Women’s track and field competed in its last home meet of the season at the Chicago Penultimate Invitational this past Saturday.
While the UAA Conference Championship is the main team focus for the Maroons’ outdoor season, the Penultimate is an opportunity for athletes to explore new events and pursue stronger NCAA rankings individually. However, this new focus on the individual as opposed to team-wide achievements can mean different things for different athletes.
“I don’t think we had any spectacular performances [at Penultimate],” fourth-year distance runner and captain Sonia Khan said. “But it’s hard transitioning from emotionally-charged meets where you run for the team score to meets where you run for your own personal bests.”
However, some athletes took this individualized focus as an opportunity to reach—or recapture—PRs. First-year Kelly Wood and second-year Luyi Adesanya, for example, both threw lifetime bests in the hammer throw, earning fourth and fifth place with distances of 35.47m and 34m, respectively.
Adesanya’s performance, in fact, marked a return to a personal best she had struggled to maintain. “I reached my PR again, which is something I haven’t been able to do for two meets,” she said. “I was happy to be competing back to my original standing again.”
Thursday’s Keeler Invitational at North Central College was characterized by a similar combination of lackluster performances and notable personal bests.
While Khan failed to meet her expectations with a 14th-place finish (37:20.92) in the 10,000-meter, third-year Julia Sizek finished with a time of 36:04.08—a time not only worthy of a second-place finish at the meet, but also an eighth-place ranking in the nation. In addition to being a fantastic time, it was Sizek’s debut performance in the 10k race.
“I was definitely surprised that I ran a qualifying time,” Sizek said. “I’ve never thought of myself as a very fast runner, but I guess hard work pays off.”
Many of the athletes who competed at Thursday’s meet were rested on Saturday, but several members of Chicago’s usual lineup still went on to secure top rankings.
Top point earners included fourth-year Jalessa Akuoko with first- (1:01.18) and second-place (26.99) finishes in the 400-meter and 200-meter, third-year Kayla McDonald with a first-place finish in the 800-meter (2:14.21), and fourth-year high jumper Paige Peltzer with a second-place jump of 1.58m.
Fourth-years Ali Klooster and Maddie Allen secured second-place finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:47.56) and triple jump (10.83m), respectively, and first-year Reecie Dern continued her streak as one of the top Maroon throwers, securing a third-place finish in the hammer throw (35.94m), and fourth-place in the discus throw (again throwing 35.94m).
The Maroons now look forward to next week’s North Central Last Chance as a final opportunity for some of their NCAA hopefuls to put in qualifying performances.

Frontier Days contests to offer cash prizes
May 13th, 2012–>
MILFORD — In the past 50 years, the annual Frontier Days event has gone through many changes, the biggest being transforming from a cookout by the Little Miami River to a four-day event in the heart of Milford
You like to see everything stay the same, but it cant. It has to progress and go on, said Wayne Florea, one of the events founders.
New this year are cash prizes for the winners of the frog jumping contest, thanks to sponsor All About Kids in Miami Township.
We are really active in the community. We just want to promote fun things for children, said Marilyn Lohrman, owner of All About Kids.
Prizes for the winners of the frog-jumping contest will be $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. There also will be a jump-off between the three winning frogs for a grand prize of $100, said Karen Huff, executive director of the Milford Miami Township Chamber of Commerce.
All About Kids has been a great supporter of the chamber of commerce and Frontier Days. It was a great fit with the frog jumping contest, said Huff.
The neat thing is the actual people who used to win it when they were younger 20 or 30 years ago are bringing their kids to compete in the event, she said.
The frog-jumping contest takes place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2. Registration is at 1 p.m. Entrants must be 15 years old or younger.
Returning is the karaoke contest with cash prizes, along with new sponsor CenterBank. Miami Township resident Eben Franckewitz will host the karaoke contest from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3.
Franckewitz is best known for competing on the 11th season of American Idol.
Were really excited that Eben is going to host the event. Its a great event and were very thankful CenterBank stepped up to the plate so we could offer cash prizes, said Huff.
Prizes for the winners of the karaoke contest will be $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place. Entrants must be 15 years or older, and pre-registration plus the $10 entry fee is due by Wednesday, May 30.
Also new this year are some food vendors, including MJs on Main, St. Columban Boy Scout Troop 55 selling ice cream and the American Legion Post 450 Womens Auxiliary selling fish sandwiches, fries and shrimp.
We have 15 food vendors this year, the largest number of food vendors Frontier Days has ever had, said Huff.
Joining the merchandise vendors this year are Paradise Fashion with jewelry and clothes, Inkas Crafts with Native American-style items and Faces by Lisa with glitter tattoos.
Frontier Days runs Thursday, May 31, through Sunday, June 3.

Early voting to begin for primary contests
May 13th, 2012Cameron County voters can start going to the polls Monday as early voting gets under way for the May 29 Democratic Party and Republican Party primaries in this presidential election year.
From the highest post in the country to constable races in the county, voters will have 12 voting polls throughout the county to exercise their right to vote as new voter registration cards already have been arriving in the mail.
Early voting continues through May 25 and Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade, along with County Elections Administrator Roger Ortiz, has been urging voters to go to the polls, starting with early voting.
For one, early voting is convenient: “Voting during this period means you can vote anywhere in your county of residence at a time that is most convenient for your schedule.”
Both also recently emphasized that photo identification will not be required.
Andrade, in a written statement, said that in lieu of a voter registration card, voters can present at least one of the following:
> A driver’s license or personal identification card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. You may also bring a similar document issued to you by an agency of another state, even if the license or card has expired;
> A form of identification that contains your photograph and establishes your identity;
> A birth certificate or other document confirming birth that is admissible in a court of law and establishes the person’s identity;
> Your United States citizenship papers;
> Your United States passport;
> Official mail addressed to you by a governmental entity; or
> A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address.
The 12 polling places are at the County Elections Department’s main office, Christ the King Catholic Church, Brownsville Public Library, Cameron Park Community Center, County Annex Building in Harlingen, San Benito Community Building, County Annex Building in Port Isabel, La Feria Fire Station, Los Fresnos Community Building, Browne Road Social Service Center, Rio Hondo Annex Building and Santa Rosa Community Center.
